Stone masons must be able to read and interpret architectural drawings, blueprints, or project specifications. They decipher the blueprints to establish the proportions, layout, and design details needed for the stone building.

Stone Selection and Preparation: Stone masons choose acceptable stones depending on project specifications and aesthetic preferences. They prepare the stones by cutting, shaping, and smoothing them with chisels, hammers, saws, and grinders.

For more precise cuts, they may also use gear such as diamond saws or waterjet cutters.

Stone Masonry: Stone masons assemble and place stones using techniques such as dry-stacking, mortar-based construction, or cladding. They use cement or adhesive to connect stones, assuring perfect alignment, stability, and structural integrity. Larger stones may also be positioned and secured using lifting equipment or cranes.

Stone Carving and Decorative components: Stone masons may specialise in stone carving and decorative components. They carve, shape, or engrave stones to produce detailed designs, sculptural elements, or ornamental details. Hand tools, pneumatic tools, or specialised carving machinery may be used.
